The Charlotte Hornets and regional Ashley HomeStore licensee Broad River Retail partnered with local non-profit Beds for Kids for the fourth annual Hoops and Dreams Event at Spectrum Center this past Saturday.
One hundred children ages 2-17 and their parents were invited to the arena for the unique and engaging event. Following lunch with Hugo and the Honey Bees, Broad River’s President and CEO Charlie Malouf and Beds for Kids Executive Director Daniel Fogarty delivered a surprising announcement. The delighted children learned that while they were enjoying their choice of a basketball clinic on the Hornets’ Court or a dance clinic with the Honey Bees, volunteers were delivering a complete new twin bed for each of them to their homes. Each child was given a new twin mattress and box spring, sheet set, pillow, pillow case and blanket.
“When these children left home this morning, they had been sleeping on the floor – most of them for their entire lives. We are humbled by the opportunity to provide them with a good night’s sleep starting tonight,” commented Malouf. “We are The Official Furniture Store of the Charlotte Hornets, and this annual community event is the cornerstone of our partnership,” he added.
“In Charlotte, between 15,000 and 17,000 kids have no bed of their own. Yet we ask kids to perform well in school, have good behavior and pay attention when they’ve not been able to sleep well the night before. It’s a huge disadvantage. We’re working hard to change that,” added Fogarty. Beds for Kids was founded in 2011 to provide beds and essential household furniture to children and their families in need.
“This event represents the confluence of partners including McAllister’s Deli, Tempur-Sealy International, Bedgear, and GBS Enterprises who come together annually with us to make an impact on our community. It would not be possible without Beds for Kids and their many devoted volunteers who delivered and set up 100 beds in just a few hours, and another army of Broad River volunteers who served and played with the children at the arena,” said Malouf. “We are grateful to the Hornets, all our partners and volunteers for making this fourth annual event such a tremendous success.”
